I spent almost three years building up context inside ChatGPT — every pricing conversation, every event story, every half-baked product idea. When I started using Claude, I didn’t want to start from zero and re-explain my whole business in every chat.
So I tried the obvious thing first: I asked ChatGPT to summarize all my chats and export a file I could hand to Claude.
It didn’t work. ChatGPT can’t read across your entire history that way. It only sees the conversation you’re actually in.
Here’s what does work — and once the export landed in my inbox, the actual work took me less than an hour.
Step 1 — Export your real ChatGPT history. There’s a built-in export most people never touch. In ChatGPT, go to Settings → Data Controls → Export Data. ChatGPT emails you a download link (anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours later). Inside is your entire chat history as one big file.
Step 2 — Don’t dump the whole thing into Claude. This was almost my second mistake. I was ready to upload the full export straight in. But a giant data dump is hard for any AI to actually use — it’s noise, not signal. More isn’t better here.
Step 3 — Build an “abstraction layer” instead. This is the part that changed everything. Instead of the raw export, you create one tight profile of yourself: who you are, how you think, what you’re working on, and how you communicate. You can feed your export to an AI in chunks and ask it to pull this profile out for you.
Think of it like briefing a new assistant. You don’t hand someone three years of email and say, “Good luck.” You give them the one-page version: here’s me, here’s my business, here’s how I like to work.
Step 4 — Load it into Claude. Paste that profile into a Claude Project or save it as a custom instruction. Now every conversation starts with Claude already knowing your pricing, your voice, and what you’re building — instead of you copy-pasting background every single time.
That’s the whole move. Export the history, condense it into an abstraction layer, and load that one document.
